At the heart of the tropical rain forest, an inland state in the south-western region of Nigeria, between longitude 04 00E and 0505 and latitude 050558N and 08007W lies the state of the living spring, Osun State. To our north we a bounded by the indigenous people of Kwara state, at our East the Ekiti and Ondo people. The Ogun state people of Nigeria occupied our boundaries on the south while the great Oyo empire bound with us in the West. In the earth of the land, the cultural state of the living spring takes approximately 14,875 square kilometers which is also landlocked and occupied 9,251 square kilometers.
Osogbo is the state capital, it is very rich in arts and crafts. It is about six hours drive from Abuja, the Federal Capital and 232 kilometers from Lagos, Nigeria\’s most prominent port city and commercial/industrial nerve-centre. Ibadan, the most populous city in West Africa is about 88 kilometers from Osogbo.
The indigenes of the state belong to the Yoruba tribe who traced their origin to Oduduwa and the town of Ile-Ife. Ile Ife is an important center of political and religious development for Yoruba culture. These people are the Oyos, IfesIjesas, Igbominas and Osuns. However, non-indigenes from all parts of Nigeria and foreigners resides in the state and live together in harmony. Yoruba and English are the languages used for official and business transactions. The people have a rich cultural heritage which is eloquently demonstrated in all spheres of their lives. Their culture finds expression in their arts, literature, music and other social activities. It is marvellous being among the people savouring the beauty of their well-acclaimed cultural inheritance. According to the National population and Housing Census exercise conducted in 2006, the State of Osun has a population of 3,423,535.
The state\’s current governor is His Excellency GovernorNurudeen Ademola Jackson Adeleke. The State of Osun is home to several of Nigeria\’s most famous landmarks, including the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria\’s pre-eminent institution of higher learning. The university is also located in the ancient town of Ile-Ife, an important early center of political and religious development for Yoruba culture. Other important cities and towns include the ancient kingdom-capitals of Oke-Ila Orangun, IlaOrangun, Ede, Iwo, Ejigbo, Modakeke, Ibokun, Esa-Oke, Ilesa, Ikirun, Ipole-Ijesa, Igbajo, Gbongan and Iragbiji.
The state is divided into three Senatorial Districts, viz, Osun I (West), Osun II (Central) and Osun III (East). Each of these districts is further divided into two zones, making a total of six zones. Osun I is made up of Ede and Iwo Zones while Osun I comprises Osogbo and Ikirun Zones. Osun III consists of Ilesa and Ife Zones. The state is made up of 30 Local Government Areas and Ife-East Area Office.
